Micky van de Ven found the net twice as Spurs prolonged their winning streak in away games in the top division and delivered Everton their initial loss at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

The Toffees were unbeaten in their five previous fixtures at their recently opened stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock, having left Goodison Park behind after 133 years at the conclusion of last season.

But Spurs captain the Dutchman struck twice from corners in the first half to put their impressive record at risk, and they were failed to turn it around before the midfielder - assisted by former Toffees attacker Richarlison - headed home a final goal to seal the victory.

The Everton defender believed he had equalized the tally five minutes after the defender's opener, directing a powerful header past the Spurs keeper from an Everton corner.

Beto, meanwhile, missed a handful of chances, while the Italian goalkeeper made a series of fine stops to ensure the London club went five matches on the road without defeat in the English top flight.

But the VAR intervened, instructing the match official to review the score on the pitchside monitor and the official decided that the winger and the attacker were in an illegal position and had impeded with the Spurs keeper.

The win moves the manager's team up to third in the division, five points off north London rivals and table-toppers Arsenal.

The Merseyside club stay in 14th position and are six points ahead of the relegation zone.

Spurs breakdown: The defender excels in role at both ends of pitch

Following a uninspiring midweek performance in the European competition against Monaco, where they mustered a mere two shots on target, the manager chose the French striker up front instead of former Toffees player the Brazilian.

The new arrival was failed to make much of an impact before being replaced for Richarlison after 60 minutes on the field, but it emerged he wasn't needed in the final outcome.

Centre-back Van de Ven transformed into an attacking force to be feared.

Tottenham's opening strike came from a cleverly executed set-piece play, with the midfielder heading the ball toward the six-yard box for an unmarked Van de Ven to score.

And Ven de Ven - stepping up as skipper in the Argentine's absence - added his second in first-half stoppage time as he rose above Jordan Pickford to head home.

Van de Ven was just as outstanding in defence, combining effectively with his defensive colleague as the pair handled excellently with the 34 crosses thrown their way by Everton.

Everton analysis: Toffees lacking finishing touch

Everton's new home had been a happy hunting ground, but it seems the freshness may have worn off slightly and fans headed to the gates after Sarr's final goal for Spurs.

The break in the team's unbeaten home run will not be a massive concern for David Moyes, but their striker situation are.

Beto and the other striker - the Everton's pair of established centre-forwards - had netted just a single goal between them before Sunday's match.

And they were unable to add to that miserable tally on a wet and gloomy evening on in Liverpool.

The striker's form was epitomized when he chose to bicycle-kick a golden opportunity from near the goal, despite having room and time to reposition for a more conventional shot that would have tested the keeper.

The substitute, too, was unable to influence the game after replacing Beto in the 65th minute.

It wasn't for a shortage of chance. Most of the home side's attacks came through Grealish and the forward, who tirelessly whipped dangerous crosses into the Tottenham penalty area.

The Toffees: The team head to the Stadium of Light in the top flight on Monday, 3 November at 8 PM.

Tottenham: Spurs travel to St James' Park on Wednesday, 29 October for their fourth-round Carabao Cup tie against Newcastle.
